GAME RECAP: Falcons fly high: FEIA holds off Orangeville Prep’s runs in OSBA game of the week

By Kareem Griffin October 29, 2026 | Fort Erie, ON

The atmosphere inside the gym at Fort Erie International Academy was electric on Tuesday night as the top-ranked FEIA Falcons welcomed No. 5 Orangeville Prep for a high-stakes Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association (OSBA) Game of the Week matchup.

What unfolded was a classic battle of momentum, high-intensity defense, and star-powered scoring bursts. Despite several relentless runs from a resilient Orangeville team, Fort Erie proved why they hold the crown, pulling away for an 87-63 victory.

1st Quarter: Fast Starts and High Energy

Orangeville Prep came out smoking. Silencing the loud FEIA home crowd early, OP uncorked a quick 5–0 opening burst powered by a clean strike from distance by Itunuayo “Ayo” Akinbodeye and an inside bucket from Emma Firth.

FEIA’s Jordyn Knor answered back with a timely three-pointer to stop the bleeding, but Orangeville Prep’s defensive intensity dictated the early tempo. Turning stops into immediate transition attacks, OP forced early turnovers from the Falcons and put FEIA’s Protia Risen in early foul trouble, sending her to the bench.

Despite the pressure, FEIA managed to hang tough, trailing 22–19 at the end of the first.

2nd Quarter: FEIA Takes Control Behind Sow and Risen

The second frame started as a chippy, whistle-heavy affair. Orangeville got to the charity stripe early, placing FEIA into foul trouble with three team fouls in the first two minutes.

However, poor offensive execution from Orangeville soon opened the floodgates for FEIA’s transition game. Class of 2028 guard Portia Risen stepped up big, drilling timely shots to knot the game up. Risen’s shot-making, paired with break-away layups, flipped the score.

From the 3:45 mark—with the foul count locked at 5–5—FEIA exploded on a 12–0 run to stretch their cushion to 39–26. Amelia Sow was simply unstoppable in the opening 16 minutes, racking up 17 of her game-high 27 points in the first half alone. A late three-pointer from Orangeville Prep’s Leah Firth broke the drought, but FEIA headed into the locker room firmly in command.

3rd Quarter: Weathering the Storm

As they did to start the game, Orangeville Prep emerged from halftime with renewed fire. Opening in a 2-3 zone, OP launched a 6–0 spurt, forcing FEIA turnovers and converting them into transition points to cut the deficit to single digits.

Every inch of the court was contested as both squads traded punches. Just as Orangeville Prep seemed poised to threaten the lead, FEIA’s perimeter shooters heated up from beyond the arc. Demonstrating the poise of a top-ranked team, Fort Erie weathered the storm and ratcheted up their defensive lock-down to rebuild an 18-point advantage heading into the final frame.

4th Quarter: Buchanan’s Firework Display vs. FEIA’s Depth

Orangeville Prep refused to go away quietly. Behind a blistering 13–6 run—including an eight-point burst to open the quarter—Orangeville Prep tried to claw back once more, even after Emma Firth picked up her fifth foul early in the period.

Orangeville Prep guard Cayenne Buchanan put on a masterclass in the fourth quarter, pouring in 14 points (highlighted by four three-pointers) on her way to a team-high 24-point performance.

However, FEIA’s firepower proved overwhelming. Driven by Sow’s physical dominance and Risen’s relentless scoring (finishing with 26 points), FEIA closed the doors with a sequence of high-octane stops and scores, stretching the final lead to 87-63.

Post-Game Quotes

FEIA Forward Amelia Sow (Cal Commit)

On her mindset coming into the matchup: “Every game, we just come out trying to dominate our opponent. We try to out-rebound, out-hustle, out-defend, everything—just try to be dogs.”

On staying composed during Orangeville’s mid-game pushes: “Basketball is a game of runs. We’re gonna have our run and they’re gonna have their run. Staying together and sticking to our principles and our style of play is what got it done for us.”

FEIA HEAD COACH HANDEL KIPP

On withstanding Orangeville Prep’s runs: “We knew it was going to be a scrappy one. Every time we play OP, it’s a scrappy game. But the main focus is for us just to continue to get better and focus on us. Whenever we played good defence and we moved the ball, we had good executions, and that was really good.”

On Amelia Sow’s 27-point night: “My expectation is always going to be high for her to always be the best version of herself. When she’s rebounding, playmaking, scoring, she’s like a jack of all trades.”
